New York's Hispanic Federation is working with the United Puerto Rican Organizations of Sunset Park to empower teens as community scientists. Volunteers from UPROSE’s Youth Justice program have mapped out a monitoring route and begun collecting data, which is being shared at community meetings. UPROSE is also collaborating with local science teachers to integrate environmental health issues into the classroom.
Founded in 1966 by Puerto Rican activists as the emerging Puerto Rican community faced social service and social justice challenges, UPROSE is Brooklyn's oldest Latino community-based organization. In 1996 our mission shifted to organizing, advocacy, and developing intergenerational indigenous leadership through activism. In reaching these goals, our primary efforts focus on environmental, social, and economic justice. For more information about UPROSE, please visit their website.
